They’re cute, clever… and potentially catastrophic.
Raccoons have officially made the UK’s invasive species watchlist — and while they’re not taking over Romford rooftops (yet), the threat is real enough for the pest control industry to take seriously.
At Bugwise Pest Control, we’re staying ahead of the curve — and here’s everything you need to know.
🔍 Why Are Raccoons on the UK’s Pest Radar?
A 2024 horizon-scanning study led by the UK Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS) and involving 42 expert organisations has flagged raccoons (Procyon lotor) as one of the top 20 most likely invaders over the next decade.
Out of 145 species reviewed, raccoons were the only vertebrate to make the final shortlist.
These animals have already become a serious issue in parts of Europe — and given their adaptability, intelligence, and disease risk, the UK is wise to be keeping a close eye.
⚠️ Are Raccoons Dangerous?
Yes — in more ways than one.
🦠 Disease and Parasites
Raccoons carry a cocktail of harmful pathogens, including:
- Rabies
- Canine distemper
- Mange
- Toxoplasmosis
- And most notably: Baylisascaris procyonis, aka raccoon roundworm.
This parasite poses a serious health risk to children, pets, poultry, and small mammals. It has been known to cause fatal central nervous system damage in rabbits, chickens, and even humans in rare cases.
🦝 Ecological Damage
As opportunistic omnivores, raccoons prey on:
- Ground-nesting birds and their eggs
- Amphibians and insects
- Small mammals (like voles and shrews)
- Field crops and garden produce
In the United States, they’re estimated to be responsible for 25% of all crop damage caused by wildlife.
🏠 Urban Disruption
Raccoons are excellent climbers and often invade:
- Lofts and attics (through roof gaps or chimneys)
- Wall cavities and insulation
- Bins and food storage areas
Once they’re in, they don’t leave quietly — causing noise, odour, and structural damage, particularly in urban or suburban homes.
👀 Are Raccoons Already in the UK?
Not yet — at least, not permanently.
There’s no confirmed breeding population in the UK, but there have been multiple sightings of escaped pets or private collection runaways:
- First UK raccoon spotted in Brecon, 1977
- 34 confirmed sightings by 2006
- More than 20 additional reports between 2014–2024 across England and Scotland
These rogue raccoons can survive for up to four years in the wild — and with no natural predators in the UK, they’d spread fast if allowed to establish.
They’ve already taken hold in Germany, France, and Poland after being introduced in the 1930s — and there’s nothing stopping the same from happening here.

🛡️ What Should You Do if You Spot a Raccoon?
If you’re in East London or Essex and think you’ve seen a raccoon — don’t panic, but don’t ignore it either.
✅ Take note of the location
✅ Try to capture a photo or video (safely)
✅ Report the sighting to the NNSS

📍 Local Context: Could Raccoons Thrive in London or Essex?
Absolutely.
Their preferred habitat is woodland near water — but in Europe, raccoons have adapted remarkably well to urban environments.
That includes:
- Suburban gardens
- Riverbanks (like those near Barking Creek or Roding Valley)
- Attics and rooftops in towns like Ilford, Romford, and Upminster
Given their intelligence and nocturnal habits, a raccoon infestation might go unnoticed until property damage or droppings are discovered.
That’s why awareness and early intervention are key.
👷♂️ How Bugwise Can Help
While raccoons aren’t yet a regulated pest in the UK, we’ve been following their rise on the European scene for years. As a BPCA-registered company, we:
- Stay updated on emerging pest risks
- Offer species ID support if you encounter something unfamiliar
- Work with property managers, councils, and private homeowners to advise on proofing measures for lofts, vents, bins, and rooflines
We’ve already supported local authorities with foxes, pigeons, and squirrels — and we’re prepared to help if raccoons ever cross the line into becoming Britain’s next pest problem.
