When Pest Control Fails: Bedbound Pensioner’s Toe Chewed Off by Rat in Council Home

By Bugwise Pest Control | 1 June 2025

In a shocking and tragic incident that has sent ripples through the UK pest control community, an 88-year-old bedbound woman in Southampton had her toe chewed off by a rat while waiting for the council to arrange pest control. This horrifying case highlights the devastating consequences of delayed action and raises serious questions about how local authorities handle infestations in vulnerable households.

A Rat Infestation Ignored

The pensioner, a diabetic and completely immobile, had been suffering a rat infestation in her council-owned home. Her daughter, Andrea Scott, first reported the issue to Southampton City Council after spotting a rat darting across the room. But instead of urgent help, she was told the treatment would cost £297—a fee entirely unaffordable for her elderly mother.

By the time Andrea scraped together the money and scheduled the service herself, the council provided a treatment date weeks away. With no immediate help available, Andrea took matters into her own hands, laying traps and poison in a desperate attempt to protect her mother.

It wasn’t enough.

Sadly, like many in desperate situations, Andrea tried to manage the infestation herself, but as we often see, DIY pest control frequently fails in severe infestations. Here’s why relying on DIY methods can be dangerously ineffective.

A Nightmare Realised

On 20 May, Andrea received a harrowing call from her mother’s carers. A rat had chewed through the woman’s sock and gnawed off the top of her toe, right down to the nail. Carers reportedly screamed when they saw the blood-soaked bedding. The pensioner, who has no feeling in her legs due to diabetes, felt no pain—perhaps the only mercy in an otherwise appalling event.

She is now recovering in the hospital. Her family remain traumatised, and understandably furious.

“The council chose not to support a vulnerable old lady,” Andrea said. “And look at what has happened.”

She has vowed never to allow her mother back into that property.

How Could This Happen in the UK?

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. Councils across the country are under pressure and often delay or outsource pest control services. Vulnerable tenants—especially the elderly, disabled, or bedbound—are at increased risk when action is not taken swiftly.

At Bugwise Pest Control, we’ve seen firsthand how infestations escalate quickly. Rats don’t wait. They multiply rapidly, spread disease, and, as this case tragically shows, can become physically dangerous to humans.

Pest Control Should Never Be Optional

This case shines a harsh light on an uncomfortable truth: council tenants are often left to fend for themselves when it comes to pests. When pest control is treated as an optional service, vulnerable lives are put at risk.

From a professional standpoint, infestations in homes with elderly or disabled occupants must be treated as emergencies, not only for hygiene and health reasons, but also because rodents, in extreme situations, will attack humans. That is no longer theoretical. It has happened.

Southampton Council has since issued a statement claiming they are investigating and arranging an “urgent visit.” But for this family, that urgency has come far too late.

The Public Deserves Better

At Bugwise, we believe pest control is a form of public health protection, not a luxury add-on. The idea that someone can be maimed in their bed by a rat while waiting weeks for help is utterly unacceptable in 2025.

If this story tells us anything, it’s that:

  • Proactive pest control saves lives.
  • Delays can lead to disaster.
  • No vulnerable person should be left to face an infestation alone.

Our hearts go out to the affected family, and we sincerely hope this story serves as a wake-up call, not just for Southampton, but for councils and landlords across the country.
