For Carpet Moths, Carpet Beetles and Similar Fabric Pests
Before We Arrive
Please complete the following preparation before your treatment:
- Vacuum all affected rooms thoroughly, including carpets, rugs, skirting boards, under furniture, under beds, behind furniture and along carpet edges.
- Move furniture away from walls where possible so we can access carpet edges, corners, skirting boards and other harbourage areas.
- Remove loose items from the floor, including clothes, shoes, bags, toys, books, storage boxes and pet bedding.
- Empty wardrobes, drawers or storage areas only if activity has been found inside them or if advised by Bugwise.
- Wash affected clothing, bedding or soft furnishings on a hot wash where suitable. Items that cannot be washed should be tumble dried on high heat if the fabric allows.
- Bag up delicate or untreated fabrics that may be at risk, especially wool, silk, cashmere, fur, feathers and other natural fibres.
- Vacuum under beds, sofas, wardrobes and any heavy furniture where accessible.
- After vacuuming, immediately empty the vacuum contents into a bag, tie it securely and dispose of it in an outside bin. This helps prevent larvae, eggs or insects from escaping back into the property.
- Remove pets from the property before treatment. Fish tanks should be covered and air pumps switched off during treatment.
- Keep children, pets and vulnerable people away from treated areas until it is safe to re enter.
During Treatment
Bugwise will carry out a steam plus chemical treatment to target eggs, larvae and adult insects where possible.
Steam treatment is used on suitable areas to help kill insects and larvae through heat.
A professional insecticide will then be applied to carpets, skirting boards, cracks, edges, affected rooms and other harbourage areas.
If there are lots of adult moths, carpet beetles or other insects visible on walls, ceilings or flying around, we may also carry out fogging to help reduce adult activity.
For treatments that include fogging or fumigation, please read our full Fumigation Preparation Checklist before your appointment.
After Treatment
You must stay out of treated areas for at least 2 hours after the treatment.
If fogging is carried out, everyone must leave the property for 2 hours.
Once you return, open windows to ventilate the rooms.
Do not vacuum treated areas for at least 10 to 14 days unless advised otherwise, as this allows the chemical treatment to keep working.
You may still see some activity after treatment, especially as hidden larvae or adults are disturbed. Activity should reduce gradually.
Important Notes
Steam plus chemical treatment works best when the property is prepared properly.
Heavy infestations may require a follow up visit.
For carpet moths and carpet beetles, the main issue is usually the larvae feeding on natural fibres, not just the adult insects.
Keeping rooms clean, reducing clutter and regularly checking wool carpets, rugs, wardrobes and stored fabrics will help prevent reinfestation.
